Otaru City, Hokkaido
Otaru, which means “small keg”, is an old port city, steeped in the history of Hokkaido.
During the reclamation and development of the island, this charming city served as the center of commerce and the center of the booming fishing industry.
Travel magazines and TV shows here in Japan continuously feature Otaru and all it has to offer as a popular tourist destination.
Strolling along the banks of the scenic Otaru Canal, down the cobblestone paths lined with gaslights, past the old stone and brick warehouses of a bygone era, which have been lovingly restored and transformed into boutiques, exotic cafes and beautiful museums, galleries and restaurants. Not surprisingly, Otaru attracts the largest number of foreign travelers who come to Japan.
